Trekking in Baguio is one of the most recommended activities, especially for adventurous travelers.

Trekking in Baguio is one of the most recommended activities, especially for adventurous travelers. Those who are accustomed to hiking, trekking, mountain climbing, rock climbing, spelunking or caving know how important it is to bring essential gear with you for the trip. Here is a checklist for both the experienced ones and to those amateur trekkers that have no idea what to bring.

In general, think nature and think rural. Don’t even think of bringing anything connected to the Internet unless you’re subscribed to your own mobile Internet service. Don’t expect trekking to have the modern conveniences of the city, which is the reason why you visited the mountains in the first place.

Since trekking is all about exploration, the most important thing would be having sensible walking shoes such as comfortable rubber shoes, sturdy sandals or hiking shoes.

With the dozen of places to explore in Baguio, travelers can dictate their own pace. Sightseeing on foot can get very physical and even strenuous especially for those who are not used to being outdoors. Bring with you light clothing such as walking shorts and a light t-shirt. Don’t get weighed down by your heavy and bulky clothing.

Baguio is known for its cool weather that can get significantly chilly especially at night. Pack with you a light jacket. Bringing a jacket will help keep you warm during the day and can also protect you from the harsh sunlight. You can easily take it off if needed and wrap it around your waist so you can move freely.

A small backpack that contains supplies, spare clothing and personal belongings will be good to carry with you especially when trekking in Baguio. Backpacks are much more recommended than shoulder bags so your hands and limbs are free for movement when climbing or descending. Some trails may take a few hours and might get you thirsty or hungry along the way. Pack a water bottle, munchies, spare shorts and an extra t-shirt. Crackers, protein bars and energy bars are always good and handy foodstuff to bring. Most importantly, bring water. Make sure your supplies do not drag you down during your trek.

Bring, apply and wear all your sun protection material. Sunlight can be harmful to the skin when hiking and trekking around Baguio. Bring sunglasses, a cap or hat and sun block as needed. Make sure to bring these supplies with you for re-application when you know that you’ll be out in the sun for several hours.

Pack your personal stuff with you such as a towel, toiletry items and medicine. Depending on the length of your hike, you may need to bring these basics along with you. Stores along the trek might not have the essentials that you need so it’s better to bring your own.

Bring a camera to document those wonderful moments of your trek.

If you want to make your trekking in Baguio trip enjoyable and hassle-free, bring these essentials that will undeniably help you have a happy trek.

With its lush pine tree forest and cool climate, Baguio is undoubtedly an ideal place for camping. There is nothing more inviting than breathing fresh air while eating outdoors surrounded by beautiful scenery. To make the experience even more enjoyable, having the right supplies and equipment when camping in Baguio matters.

The most important equipment a camper will need is a tent. Shelter should always be a priority-if not the priority. Tents vary in shapes, sizes and even price. From the simple single-occupant kind to large family tents, it is important to choose a tent that will suit the terrain and climate of the destination. Depending on your time of visit, your camping tent for Baguio should withstand the hot summer weather, the rains and the cool environment.

Most people like to have some kind of mattress to sleep on, something that cushions against the ground and provides good insulation too. Air mattresses usually come in single, double or king sizes with pumps that can be charged by a car battery. Make sure your mattress will fit inside your tent. A good sleeping bag will ensure a good night’s sleep, especially during the cool climate of Baguio. There are different choices of material for corresponding weather conditions so make sure to choose one applicable to Baguio’s weather.

A lantern or flashlight is also a must-bring. To those who are into environment-friendly items, get a solar flashlight that captures energy during the day in sunlight and can be used during the night. Hand-cranked table lanterns are also good because of the LED lights.

Sheltered dining compartments provide extra space to make camping more comfortable. Bring along plastic tables and chairs as they are easy to clean and can last for years. Portable stoves, kettles, barbecues and pans are great to use in the outdoors. Some camping sites around Baguio City provide grills in designated camping spots. Make use of these to illuminate extra baggage when camping. Keep food, beer and wine in cool boxes to prevent spoilage.

To those who prefer not cooking while camping, bring in supplies that are pre-prepared items, specifically those that just need the addition of hot water. There are many food products out there that become delicious meals with simple preparation and a bit of smart seasoning on the camping chef’s part. Don’t forget to bring lots of water along, of course. No matter what type of food supplies you decide to use when camping, make sure to bring cooking and eating utensils with you too.

To those who can’t stand the chilly weather of Baguio, campers may want to use a heater during the cold nights. There are many kinds of heaters to choose from with safety features to ensure they don’t overheat during the night. Also, think about toilet facilities prior to your trip. If you think that you might have difficulty in this aspect, check out portable and chemical toilets that are available in the market.

Before you wander off into the mountains of the Cordillera Region, make sure to take note of these reminders to make your camping in Baguio experience a memorable one-in a good way.

The City of Pines has always been a destination getaway for Filipinos. It has a completely different environment from the rest of the country, which may be the reason for its popular choice. The feeling of being in “Little America” adds to its unique aura of seemingly vacationing outside of the Philippines. One of the most favorite activities that remain unique to the city is boat riding in Baguio.

Boating at the Burnham Park Lagoon is the park’s main attraction. However, it’s not free to boat as the boats need to be rented. It costs about 60 pesos for half an hour and 120 pesos for a whole hour. The boat can accommodate up to four people at a time.

Kids and the young at heart most especially will enjoy the little boat ride in the man-made lagoon found at Burnham Park. Many young ones have their first boat ride in Baguio. Parents and companions should then practice certain safety precautions when boat riding in Baguio. Although the man-made lake is pretty shallow, it is still important to take safety measures especially for those on their first time.

Make sure to take your child onto the boat even before going out of the water. By this, you will be able to access the safe areas and the not safe areas on the boat. Life jackets are a good idea especially for younger kids. Although wearing life jackets on the Burnham Lagoon is not required, you may want to make sure that your child is safe by having them wear a life jacket. Make sure to tell your child not to remove the life jacket the entire time he is in the boat. Tell him the proper way to sit when the ride begins. Let him know the safe areas and the danger areas on the boat. For first-time riders, have the child help you steer the boat to satisfy his curiosity. Make him feel comfortable to alleviate any fears of boat riding.

Watch as people paddle, or struggle to paddle the boats around the lagoon. People watchers will definitely enjoy watching other boats get stuck in the center of the lagoon or even start paddling around in circles. Other visitors can rent skates and bikes around the Burnham Park if boat riding is not their activity. The park is parallel to the famous Session Road, which is easy to find around the city.

The lake used to offer swan-shaped boats where visitors use their legs to paddle. Unfortunately, these boats have been taken off the lake and replaced with standard small boats that make use of arm paddles. It’s also fascinating to see convenience stores called sari-sari stores that roam around in boats selling junk food, soft drinks and local delicacies. You can even have pizza delivered to your boat right in the middle of the lagoon!

Not only is Baguio a great tourist destination with many attractions, it’s a great place to enjoy quality time with your family and friends. With the simple activity of boat riding in Baguio, the City of Pines can be enjoyable as you want it to be!

The city of Baguio is bargain hunter’s paradise. Prices in Baguio flea markets and souvenir shops are usually not fixed, so shopping in Baguio requires you to demonstrate the best of your haggling skills.

Baguio, despite being the Summer Capital of the Philippines is no tourist trap. The city offers reasonable prices and rates compared to other tourist destinations in the country. A reason why locals of Baguio are so lenient when it comes to haggling is because residents are frugal in nature. They won’t take it against you if you haggle for a lower price.

With that, here are some tips on the best places to shop and what to look for in Baguio:

The ultimate place to shop will be at the Baguio City Market where visitors can get anything and everything. Whatever you need, the City Market will definitely have it.

For Filipiniana, ethnic furniture and antiques, head to the upper floors of the Maharlika Livelihood Center where the parking lot is. This is a favorite bargain hunter place that offer shipping services.

The entire length of the Session Road is Baguio’s premier shopping area. Anchored by SM City Baguio Mall on Luneta Hill, up until the Baguio City Market located on the base of Magsaysay Avenue, specialty shops and restaurants are lined up along this city center where everybody gets their supplies.

The market at Mines View Park has a great selection of dry goods comparable to the ones found at the city market. Truth is, the park is more of a shopping area already than a park as better views can be found elsewhere in the city.

The Good Shepherd Covenant along Gibraltar Road is a favorite stop to many. This store can be found very close to Mines View Park. Delicacies such as peanut brittle, ube and strawberry jam are the store’s best sellers. They have expanded to other products such as baked goodies, tasty strawberry-calamansi juice and homemade ice cream.

Souvenir shops are located near every tourist attraction. Unlike other parts of the country, these souvenir stores are no tourist scammers. Vendors know that visitors can easily compare prices, which is why they don’t bother increasing the rates.

The Mile-Hi Center at Camp John Hay is known for its factory outlets of export overrun garments from the Baguio Export Processing Zone.

Narda’s found on the Upper Session Road is known for their internationally-renowned original woven clothes.

If you like sticking to what you know, there are malls such as SM City, Abanao Square and Center Mall where similar stuff can be found all over the country.

And of course, the Ukay-Ukay of Baguio is what bargain enthusiasts go crazy over. Also known as Wagwagan, these thrift stores sell anything from used clothes to old children’s toys. If you’re lucky, you might even find an authentic vintage Louis Vuitton Bag for a fraction of the cost found on EBay!

What used to be the city’s best-kept secret when it comes to shopping in Baguio is now revealed. Boast of your one-of-a-kind finds and enjoy haggling down to the most affordable prices!

Horseback riding is a very common activity in the city of Baguio. Young adults most especially take on an hour’s trail ride to explore the hills of the city on a horse. Horseback rides in Baguio are a pleasant experience to those who like animals and want to feel the soft cool breeze of the city itself without being hindered by the usual technological baggage of modern-day life.

Now that most of the city roads are fully developed, most of the trail rides are accessed via paved roads. Even so, a riding guide is essential on any of the horseback rides. A ratio of 1 guide to 2-3 riders is usually required to help the rider and the horses go along the way. Guides can be hired in either of two categories: the walking guide or the riding guide. The walking guide will be accompanying the group by foot on a slow-paced activity of horseback riding. For the more experienced ones, a riding guide would have to bring along his own horse and direct the group to other proper pathways.

Here are some of the most popular trail rides found around Baguio City with most of them starting from the Wright Park Riding Circle:

Mines View Park - This trail will start by climbing up Wright Park and passing through the Gibraltar Road. The group will enter through some unpaved residential roads and head back down the Outlook Drive. Horses are not allowed along the Mines View Market Road anymore and may not pass in front of the Mansion as well. The duration of the trail lasts about an hour, which is not a very long trail. It costs about 300 pesos exclusive of the guide fee.

Country Club Trail – Turning at the Pacdal Rotunda towards Park Drive (Nanoy Ilusorio Drive) is how this trail starts. Take a left turn at the fork to the Country Club Drive. Pass the Baguio Country Club and go down the Happy Hallow Baranggay, which is located right before the second entrance of Camp John Hay. The length of the trail will depend on how deep into the Happy Hallow Baranggay you can go. The trail gets narrower as you go deeper and this may require you to walk your horses on a single file. Duration lasts an hour at 300 pesos exclusive of the riding guide.

Marlboro Country – Known to be the best trail, past the Pacdal Road up towards the Ambuklao Road. Turn to Tiptop where a plateau can be seen where experienced riders can ride their horses like true cowboys. The duration of the trail lasts about 2 hours at a cost of 600 pesos without the fee of the guide.

Japanese Trail – This follows the route taken by the Japanese as they left the city towards the province of Nueva Vizcaya at the end of the Japanese Occupation. Riders head towards Beckel to Ambuklao Road and turn towards the Ambiong Road. Riders will have to pass by crowded residential areas on the way down, which may be unpleasant to some. It takes about 3 hours to finish the trail at 900 pesos excluding the guide fee.

Horseback rides in Baguio remain one of the favorite activities for tourists. Travelers usually take up horseback rides whenever in the city to grab the opportunity to experience this famous leisure activity of Baguio.

Located right across the Mansion in Baguio City, Wright Park is one of the three well-visited and magnificent parks in the city of Baguio. Aside from the Mines View Park and the Burnham Park, this park is another relaxing and refreshing place to enjoy the City of Pines. It has unique features of its own and is extremely accessible to other tourist spots such as the Mines View Park and Baguio Cathedral.

Popularly called as the “Pool of Pines”, the Wright Park has a majestic and fascinating collection of pine trees. Travelers should have their cameras ready because every angle of the park provides a scenic and enticing view. The park has a man-made lake that is shaped in a rectangular form surrounded by a spectacular line of pine trees. The park remains extremely attractive at night with the beautiful streetlights that allow tourists to glimpse its attractive flowers. Igorots are often found around the park where visitors usually buy native handicrafts, souvenir items, and silver accessories sold by the Igorots. Igorots at the park are usually more than happy to accommodate visitors who want to take pictures with them in their complete Igorot attire or costume.

Horseback riding is one of the main activities of the park. Visitors will need to walk through a stairway located at the center of the site in order to reach the area where they can ride horses. Parents should have nothing to worry about as the safety of their children is assured when riding horses. Two different areas of the park are designated accordingly with one for running ponies and the other for walking them.

The horse guides at the park are skilled and accredited horse riders that guide each horse upon the rider’s demand. Riders can just focus on the surroundings of the park and not have to worry about maneuvering the animal. Horse riders provide all means to assure the safety of all horse riders especially with the beginners. Children are usually accompanied by skilled horse guides to completely guarantee their safety.

With horseback riding a common activity in Baguio City, it has become less expensive to ride around Wright Park than in other tourist sites around the city. A fare of 300 pesos per hour or 150 pesos for half an hour is charged to rent the horse at the park. There are over 200 horses to choose from that greatly vary in size, color and shape. Tourists can also ask guides to accompany them to other places in the city such as the Mansion and the Mines View Park by use of their horses. For the more adventurous ones, you can request to ride a horse to explore the mountain and hills of the Cordillera region for a day.

With the amazing line of pine trees and horse backing riding activities, Wright Park is certainly one of the most exciting tourist sites in the city of Baguio. For a relaxing and memorable vacation in the city, travel to Baguio is incomplete without a visit to this park.

Session Road is the main thoroughfare of the city of Baguio with its variety of shops, stores and offices lined up on each side. Local residents, tourists and visitors are constantly seen taking leisurely walks up and down the hill doing activities such as window shopping, snacking on ice cream cones or talking endlessly with their friends. But to know a little bit more about this famous road of Baguio, here are five things you may have been apprised of about the legendary road.

Historical Significance – The road is the site of the very First Session of the Second Philippine Commission. It is here where it got its name as well. The road leads up to the old Baden-Power Hall where the Second Philippine Commission was held in 1904. The Philippine Commission was the body that was appointed by the U.S. President during the American Occupation in the Philippines. The very first Philippine Commission was appointed by the US President in year 1899. The Second Philippine Commission was then held in Baguio City. During this time, Baguio was declared the Philippine Summer Capital as well. Today, the only visible evidence of this historical significance lies in the Baden-Powell Inn along Governor Pack Road.

Two Sections - The road is divided into two sections: the Upper Session Road and the Lower Session Road. The latter is a much more visited area than its upper counterpart because most commercial establishments are located there. Truth is, no one calls it as the Lower part anymore. The lower part of the road runs from the intersection of Magsaysay Road, up towards the Baguio Cathedral and until the Governor Pack Road. The upper section, on the other hand, starts from the Post Office and the base of Luneta Hill, all the way up the rotunda of South Drive, the Military cut-off Road and until the Loakan Road.

Real Estate – The road is the most expensive Baguio real estate due to its central location, volumes of pedestrian traffic and limited space of commercial spots for rent. Properties and spaces along the road come with extremely steep rates.

Start Off Point – During the early years of the Pangabenga or Flower Festival of Baguio, parades used to start at the upper part of the road and descend towards the Magsaysay Avenue, turn at Harrison Road and ends up at Burnham Park. Although the routes of the parades have slightly differed, the same road is still favored for many parades due to its sloping roads that give spectators a fabulous view of the floats, street dancers and bands.

Route to anywhere in Baguio – The road’s central location is what causes it to be the most congested road of vehicles and pedestrians. It also connects all the major roads of Baguio such as the Leonard Wood Road, Loakan Road, Magsaysay Avenue and Harrison Road. Most of these roads lead to a popular tourist attraction which adds even more to the road’s daily traffic.

All of these make Session Road a path worth traveling, whether you want to just tread the footsteps of Baguio history or want to do some shopping. Add the terrifically cool Baguio weather and a stroll along Session Road is a totally unique experience that is one not to miss when visiting the City of Pines.
