As one of the provinces located in the mountains of the Cordillera Region of the Philippines, Ifugao has a rich culture and history that remains fascinating to many foreigners and Filipinos. Due to this insistent demand to explore the culture of the Ifugao people, the local government of Baguio City along with the Chanum Foundation Inc. developed the latest addition to the growing line of tourist attractions of Baguio, the Tam-awan Village.

With the goal to preserve the culture of the province, the foundation created a living museum that features the artifacts that reflect the Ifugao’s distinct history and way of life. The village is also host to many art exhibits and cultural performances that attract many tourists. It is not only a tourist spot of the city, but is also a community where artists devote themselves to creating wonderful cultural works of art.

The village started in 1998 when a group of artists decided to reconstruct a model village of the Ifugao in a blank land in Baguio City. The group moved just three Ifugao huts that came from Banga-an town for a start. As years passed, and with the support of the Chanum Foundation Inc., the group started transporting several huts from the province of Banga-an up until year 2008. They were able to transport eight huts to the village of Tam-awan. To lure even more tourists in, the group organizes several cultural and recreational activities on a timely basis at the village.

The village has a main hut where a store and an information office are located for the convenience of its visitors. Native handicraft items, books and publications about the Igorot people, their culture and traditions are sold there. You can even order a hot cup of native coffee after touring the village, which is an especially nice treat on a cold and rainy day.

For an even more thorough experience of the Ifugao culture, artists of the village offer a number of accommodation packages to visitors. Rates start as low as 500 pesos a day with packages that include breakfast and lunch meals. Other visitors may opt to rent spaces for 150 pesos to have picnics and a bonfire at the village. To those who want a different experience for seminars and conferences, spacious and beautiful huts are available for rent at the village for only 5,000 pesos a day. Entrance fees to the village are 50 pesos for adults, 20 pesos for children and 30 pesos for senior citizens.

As the village continues to promote the development of works of art, visitors can attend art workshops held within the village at 400 pesos a day. Foundations and private organizations can also hold their cultural shows and events at the village for as low as 5,000 pesos per day.
